Knife reviews
After admiring Mayall knives for some time I was lucky enough to win one of Paul’s knives recently in a competition sponsored by Mayall Knives.
Paul added some custom touches to the knife according to my specifications, such as the fallow palm antler handle and a wild boar impression on the sheath. I was not disappointed when the knife arrived at my door. I was immediately impressed with the quality of workmanship which, to my eye, appeared flawless. It is obvious that Paul is a passionate and skilled knifemaker.
My Mayall Knife was absolutely shaving sharp on arrival and I was counting the days until I would get opportunity to put the knife though its paces.
That opportunity came on a recent bowhunt into the Hunter Valley ranges where I used my Mayall knife to butcher a fallow deer and take the jaw out of a solid boar.
The knife felt brilliant in the hand and is perfectly balanced, it made short work of the fallow spiker, allowing me to quickly remove the choice cuts and get back into the hunting. There is nothing worse than struggling with a knife that is not up to the task, wasting valuable hunting time. When I was finished with the fallow, a quick rinse of the knife was all that was required as the blade held its shaving edge perfectly.
The next trial came in the form of chunky mountain boar. It has always taken me some time to remove pig jaws with my previous knives, but I had the thing out in about two minutes and trust me, that is well and truly a record for me. I was pleasantly surprised to find that once again no touch-up on the steel was required.
I am extremely happy with my Mayall knife, it is an absolute pleasure to use as well as being superbly crafted. I look forward to many years of service from it.
I have no hesitation in recommending that anyone looking for a custom made knife should talk to Paul and consider a Mayall knife.
